Chromebook

Uses the Android app

A Chromebook uses the Android version of VPNclient from Google Play, which our supplier has confirmed for Android. It needs Google Play to be available on your Chromebook.

Only download from this link or your device's app store.

This device uses the Android version of VPNclient from Google Play, which our supplier has confirmed. Sign in with the VPN username and password from My Pass.

What to know first

  • This route needs Google Play to be available on your Chromebook, which depends on the model and ChromeOS version.

  • ChromeOS also has its own VPN settings under Settings, then Network. What it offers depends on the version.

  • Chromebooks from a school or employer are often managed. The administrator may block apps or VPN changes. Ask them first, and do not try to work around the restriction.

Before you start

  • An active pass. Open My Pass and check it shows days remaining.

  • Your VPN username and password from My Pass. They are not your XPASS website email.

  • A personal Chromebook, or permission from the administrator if it is managed.

  • Google Play Store turned on in your Chromebook settings.

Install and connect

  1. Step 1

    Check Google Play is available

Open Settings and look for Google Play Store. If it is not there or is turned off, this route is not available on your Chromebook.

  2. Step 2

    Install the Android app

Use the Google Play link above to install VPNclient, the same free app listed for Android. Only install it from the official link or Google Play.

  3. Step 3

    Open it and sign in

Open the app and sign in with the username and password from My Pass. There is no sign-up inside the app.

  4. Step 4

    Allow the connection request

When you first connect, ChromeOS may ask permission to set up a VPN connection. Check that it names the VPN app you installed, then allow it.

  5. Step 5

    Connect

Use the connect button and wait until the app shows you are connected.

Check it works

Computer window showing the VPN connected in green
  • Look for the VPN status in the network panel at the bottom right of the screen.
  • With the VPN off, search for "what is my IP" in your browser and note the address. Connect, reload the page and compare. The address should be different.
  • If the address does not change, the traffic is not using the VPN, so do not rely on it.

If something goes wrong

  • The app will not install or will not open. Not every Chromebook runs every Android app. This route may not suit your model.
  • The VPN option is missing or greyed out. A school or employer may manage the device. Ask the administrator.
  • Sign-in fails. Copy the username and password from My Pass again and check for a space at the start or end. Confirm your pass is still active.
  • Connected but nothing loads. Disconnect, restart the Chromebook and connect again.
  • Nothing works. Use your pass on Android, Windows, Mac, iPhone or iPad, which are confirmed, or contact our support team.
