Living Abroad and Missing Thai TV? What to Know Before You Try
Missing Thai dramas, the news or a favourite show while living abroad is common. The first question is whether the provider allows viewing outside Thailand, because broadcast and streaming rights are sold region by region.
This guide does not claim a way to watch every channel. It explains what to check with the provider, a fact confirmed from an official help page, and where a VPN fits. XPASS does not include any streaming or TV subscription and is not affiliated with the providers mentioned.

First check each provider's terms: viewing rights depend on region and licensing
TrueID's help centre says some content may be restricted by area because of copyright
A VPN does not change licensing, and providers may detect or restrict VPN connections
Why some Thai TV is unavailable outside Thailand
Dramas, news, sport and other programmes are not always licensed worldwide. App and web providers often receive rights only for agreed regions, and some content may be restricted by programme, channel or package.
That is why you may be able to open the same app in Thailand and abroad, yet find certain channels or shows will not play. A refusal from the provider does not mean there is a problem with your account.
What providers say
TrueID
TrueID's help centre has a question on watching from abroad. It says some content may have area restrictions under copyright and the provider's conditions, and that you should check the conditions of the content or package before using it overseas.
AIS PLAY and other services
We could not confirm a statement about use outside Thailand from AIS PLAY's official pages, so we do not say whether it works or not. Check the FAQ and terms of the app you use, or ask the provider's customer service directly.
The same principle applies to any service: if there is no clear statement that overseas use is supported, assume it may be restricted.

What to do before looking for anything else
- Read the terms of the app you use, including your package and the specific channels or programmes you want.
- Ask the provider whether there is a package or route for overseas users.
- Check the programme's official channels. Some programmes publish catch-up or clips in places open worldwide, at the owner's discretion.
- Always follow the terms of use. Breaking them may affect your account.
If you also miss your Netflix library, see missing Thai Netflix abroad and our Thai TV and streaming page.
Checklist before you leave or move
- Note the apps you watch regularly and what your package covers, channel by channel or programme by programme.
- Open each provider's help centre and look for a question about use outside Thailand. TrueID, for example, has one.
- If the conditions are unclear, ask the provider and keep the answer.
- Check that you can sign in using a method that works abroad (see the OTP section below).
- Open the app a few days before departure so there is time to ask questions or fix problems.
Where a VPN fits, and where it does not
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server. It is clearly useful on public Wi-Fi, in shared housing or on networks you do not trust.
What a VPN does not do is change the licensing a provider holds. A VPN server in a country does not prove a streaming app or site will work, and streaming providers may detect or restrict VPN connections. Using a VPN may therefore reduce what you can watch or block playback. XPASS has not recorded a compatibility test with AIS PLAY or TrueID and makes no promises.
Always follow the provider's terms of use and local law.
Staying safe on networks that are not yours
Whatever you watch, on dorm, café or airport Wi-Fi look out for fake hotspots and fake sign-in pages, use unique passwords, turn on two-step verification where the app offers it, and sign out of any TV or device that is not yours. More in staying safer on public Wi-Fi.
Planning your viewing around life abroad
These points are not about licensing, but they make a big difference in practice. This section is general advice, not statements from any provider.
Broadcast times
Thailand is on UTC+7 with no daylight-saving change. If you live in a different time zone, a drama or live show may air in the middle of your night or early morning. Work out the times in advance and use catch-up where the provider offers it.
Downloads
Some apps let you download programmes for offline viewing. Whether that is possible depends on each app's terms and on each programme. Check the app's help page for whether downloading is allowed and what limits apply by region or time.
Signing in with a Thai phone OTP while abroad
Many services send a one-time code to a mobile number. If you change SIM or do not enable roaming, you may not receive the text. Prepare before you leave:
- Ask your mobile operator whether you can receive SMS while roaming.
- Sign in on the devices you are taking before you go.
- If the app lets you add an email or another verification method, set it up as a backup.
- Never read out a code to someone who contacts you, even if they claim to be from the provider.
On devices that are not yours
If you watch on a dorm or hotel TV, sign out every time and do not let it remember the password.

Can I watch TrueID from abroad?
TrueID's help centre says some content may be restricted by area because of copyright and the provider's conditions, so check the content or package conditions before using it overseas.
Can I watch AIS PLAY from abroad?
We could not confirm a statement from AIS PLAY's official pages, so we cannot answer for them. Check the app's FAQ and terms or ask the provider.
Why do some programmes play and others not in the same app?
