Living Abroad and Missing Thai Netflix? What You Can Actually Do

If you have moved abroad to study, work or live and your Netflix library no longer looks like it did in Thailand, that is normal. Netflix's help centre explains that the catalogue depends on where you are right now.

This guide does not promise a trick to see the Thai library from elsewhere. It explains what Netflix says, what you can do, where a VPN fits and its limits. XPASS does not include a Netflix subscription, so you need your own account.

  • Netflix says what you see depends on your current location, so seeing the Thai library abroad cannot be guaranteed

  • Titles Netflix licenses worldwide, such as Squid Game and Stranger Things, remain available

  • A VPN is not a shortcut: Netflix says it can reduce what you see or stop playback

Why your Netflix library changes when you live abroad

Netflix licenses content country by country or region by region, so a title available in one place may not exist in another. Netflix's help page on travelling notes that streaming and download choices, including audio and subtitle options, vary by country.

Its page "Netflix thinks I'm in a different country" says the catalogue is location based: if Netflix sees you in another country, you may see unavailable titles or unexpected languages.

So if you live in Japan, the UK or Australia, you see that country's library, even if your account was created with a Thai card and phone number.

Your account versus the library you see

Your account stays yours. Your watch history, My List and profiles remain. What changes is the catalogue shown for your current location.

Things to check after you move:

  • Payment method: Netflix says gift cards and some cash payment methods vary by country and may not work. Update to a method accepted where you live.
  • Maturity ratings differ by country and can affect parental controls.
  • Downloads made elsewhere may be unavailable in another country.
  • Two homes: Netflix recommends connecting and streaming from your main location at least once a month.

What you can realistically do

  1. Search titles on Netflix where you live. Some shows are available under a different name or category.
  2. Watch Netflix originals with worldwide rights. Netflix names Squid Game and Stranger Things as examples of titles it licenses globally.
  3. Download before a short trip, then test one, because Netflix says downloads may stop working in another country.
  4. Use local streaming services for what Netflix does not carry where you live.
  5. Contact Netflix if what you see seems wrong for your location.

For Thai TV and streaming apps, see watching Thai TV abroad.

Where a VPN fits, and where it does not

A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server. That is clearly useful on public Wi-Fi, but for Netflix you need to be careful.

Netflix's help centre says that with a VPN you may only be shown titles Netflix has worldwide licensing for, and that you may need to turn the VPN off to watch what is available in your region. It also says VPNs are not supported for live events or ad-supported plans.

We therefore cannot tell you that connecting a VPN will show the Thai library. XPASS has not recorded a passing Netflix test, and a VPN server in a country does not prove a streaming service will work. If playback fails, turn the VPN off and try again. Follow Netflix's terms of use and local law.

If you see the VPN or proxy message

Netflix may show "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy" (code E106). Netflix's steps:

  • Visit fast.com. If the country shown does not match where you are, a VPN is likely active on your device or network.
  • Turn the VPN off and try again. Some antivirus software includes a VPN, so check that too.
  • Make sure you are not on an ad-supported plan.
  • Reset network settings and your router, or contact your internet provider.

Netflix says its customer service cannot help turn off a VPN because the steps differ for each one.

After you move: keeping the account secure

In the first weeks abroad you tend to sign in from new devices and new networks, so it pays to tidy the account.

  1. Change your Netflix password to one you do not use anywhere else.
  2. Turn on two-step verification on the email account you signed up with. Whoever controls the email can reset the password.
  3. Open Manage Access and Devices in Netflix and sign out devices you no longer use, such as the TV in your old home. Netflix notes devices can take up to 48 hours to appear in the list.
  4. Watch for phishing emails and texts claiming a problem with your account and asking you to click a link. Go through the app directly instead.
  5. Check how you receive verification codes. If you drop your Thai SIM, add an email or backup method before cancelling the old number.

Is a VPN still useful for Thais living overseas?

Yes, for security and everyday reliability: shared dorm networks, cafés and airports, and logging in to banking or work accounts on networks you do not control. See staying safer on public Wi-Fi.

For your first week choose a 7-day pass; for about a month a 30-day pass; for a longer stay a 90-day pass. XPASS is a one-time payment with no automatic renewal, and you can renew when you need more time.

How to set it up

  1. Check Netflix where you live

Search for the titles you want and read Netflix's help page on how titles vary by country.

  2. Update payment and profiles

Make sure your payment method works locally and check maturity ratings on kids' profiles.

  3. If you want a VPN for security, choose a pass and open My Pass

Pay once, then follow the setup shown on My Pass for your device. Login details appear only there. See getting started with XPASS.

  4. Test Netflix with the VPN on and off

If playback fails or the library shrinks, turn the VPN off, as Netflix advises.

Limitations to know first

  • XPASS does not include a Netflix subscription. You need your own account.
  • The Netflix catalogue depends on your location and licensing. XPASS cannot promise you will see another country's library through a VPN.
  • Netflix may detect or restrict VPN connections. A VPN may reduce what you can watch or block playback, and live events and ad-supported plans do not support VPNs.
  • XPASS has not recorded a compatibility test result with Netflix.
  • Follow the service's terms of use and local law.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the Thai Netflix library abroad?

Because the catalogue depends on where you are and on regional licensing. Netflix says streaming and download choices can differ by country.

Is there a guaranteed way to see Thai Netflix from abroad?

No. Netflix says a VPN may limit you to titles licensed worldwide, and you may need to turn it off to see your region's library.

Can I still watch Netflix originals abroad?

Titles Netflix licenses worldwide, such as Squid Game and Stranger Things, are available regardless of country, but not every original is licensed that way.

Will using a VPN get my account banned?

We have no evidence either way. Netflix says it may show a VPN or proxy message and advises turning the VPN off. Read Netflix's terms of use.

Does XPASS include Netflix?

No. XPASS sells prepaid VPN passes only.

Which XPASS pass should I start with right after moving abroad?

If you are unsure how often you will use it, start with a shorter pass. XPASS is prepaid with a one-time payment and no auto-renewal, and renewing adds days on top of what remains.
